My 35th Birthday Dinner at 1845 in Flower Mound, Texas
For my birthday, I usually like to try a new steakhouse I’ve never been to. I really enjoy a good ribeye, so finding a new steakhouse to try has become one of the ways I like to celebrate.
For my 35th Birthday, I decided to try 1845 in Flower Mound, Texas.
Funny enough, I had actually heard about 1845 the year before from my dental hygienist.
Why I Chose 1845
Last year, around my birthday, I had one of my biannually dental cleaning. My dental hygienist asked me what I had planned for my birthday. I told her that I loved going to steakhouses and that I was considering Perry’s Steakhouse that year.
She told me about 1845.
She had gone there for a rehearsal dinner for her brother-in-law and spoke highly of the tomahawk steak. She told me I should consider trying it.
I told her I would keep it in mind.
She actually wrote the restaurant down on a sticky note for me, and I left that sticky note on my refrigerator until this year. ha
So when my 35th birthday came around, I remembered 1845 and decided it was finally time to try it.
This was my first time visiting the restaurant, so I really didn’t know what to expect.
1845 is located in a shopping plaza in Flower Mound with several other restaurants. From what I learned, the owner also has several other restaurants in the DFW area.
The restaurant has a very moody and dark atmosphere, which I actually liked. The decor leans heavily into the Texas steakhouse theme, with Texas-inspired artwork, food and interior details.
It felt like a modern steakhouse while still keeping that Texas feel.
My Birthday Dinner
I made our reservations for 4:30 p.m.
I internationally chose an early dinner because I wanted to beat the traffic and avoid having a late drive home. If you’ve lived in the DFW area, you already know how quickly a simple drive home can turn into a mini road trip adventure.
We were seated at a booth, and once we sat down, the hose brought over a champagne bottle with fairy lights inside.
She explained that it was their way of helping everyone know that we were celebrating a birthday.
Later, she brought over a card from the restaurant wishing me a happy birthday.
I’ve been to other restaurants where birthday decorations were already waiting on the table when you were seated, so this was a little different. I actually thought the champagne bottle was a cute touch.
Our waiter was great.
He explained some of the restaurant’s decor and the story behind it, walked us through the menu and gave recommendations for everything from cocktails to food.
I had already done my research before coming. I browsed the menu, read reviews and watched a few videos, so I pretty much knew what I wanted to order before we even arrived.
I don’t drink anymore, but our waiter did let me know that they could make me a mocktail. I decided to stick with water. Honestly, I wanted to save the room for the food.
What We Ordered
Drinks
My spouse ordered the Woodford Old Fashioned with TX, which is one of his favorite drinks. It’s also one of the restaurant’s signature drinks.
He enjoyed it so much that he ordered two.
The Texas Experience
For our appetizer, we ordered the Texas Experience.
It is a Texas sampler board that includes fried jalapenos, poblano meatballs, pork belly and Lockhart fried quail drums.
We chose this because I wanted to try the poblano meatballs and my spouse wanted the fried quail drums.
Since we both wanted different things, this seemed like the best option because we could try several items instead of ordering separate appetizers.
I also like that it gave us a little taste of several different things on the menu.
The Tomahawk
For our entree, we decided to share the 36oz. Tomahawk.
If you remember, this was the steak my dental hygienist recommended to me the year before, so of course I had to try it.
We also ordered a Caesar salad, Brussels sprouts, Au Gratin potatoes, sauteed mushrooms and a side of peppercorn sauce.
Overall, everything was really tasty.
The Au Gratin potatoes were probably my least favorite of the sides. They weren’t bad, but they didn’t stand out to me.
The peppercorn sauce, however, paired really well with the steak.
And yes, the Tomahawk was good!
I did wish it had a little more sear on it.
I’m always going to be a ribeye girl, but I’m glad I finally tried it after having it recommended to me the year before.
Dessert
For dessert, we ordered the bourbon peach cobbler and double chocolate.
I actually didn’t want dessert.
But our waiter gave my spouse such a good description of the desserts that somehow he convinced him that we needed to order them.
Let’s just say the description was better than the actual dessert.
We both ended up saying we probably shouldn’t have ordered it.
Originally, we planned to pick up cupcakes for my birthday, but with the timing of everything, we weren’t able to get them that day. Instead, we picked them up the next day.
So technically, I still got my birthday cupcakes. Just a day late.
My 35th Birthday Dinner Experience
My birthday still felt special, even though the main celebration was simply going to dinner.
And honestly, that’s one of my favorite ways to celebrate.
I enjoy going out to dinner, especially when it’s a steakhouse. I don’t necessarily need a big party or an elaborate experience.
I was expecting 1845 to feel a little more upscale and formal than it actually did.
The atmosphere was more casual than I expected.
I also noticed there were quite a few people at the bar, which makes sense since the restaurant is known for its happy hour.
That wasn’t necessarily a bod thing. It just wasn’t quite the atmosphere I had pictured when I initially decided to go there for my birthday but that’s okay.
The decor was probably one of my favorite parts. I really liked the interior and how they incorporated Texas-inspired details throughout the restaurant.
The menu also had several options that stood out to me.
Would I Go Back?
I would probably go back if I were in the Flower Mound area.
Would I drive out of the way specifically to eat there?
Probably not.
There were some things we ordered that we really enjoyed and a few things that weren’t our favorites. That’s pretty normal when you’re trying somewhere new.
I would still recommend 1845 to someone who wanted to try a steakhouse in the area, especially if they are already nearby. Or simply wanted something new to try.
Final thoughts
I wanted my 35th birthday to feel special, but I also didn’t need anything over the top.
I wanted good food, a nice atmosphere and an experience I would remember.
And honestly, that’s what I got.
I also like that this birthday introduced me to somewhere I had heard about a year before. Who knew that little sticky note my dental hygienist gave me would end up sitting on my refrigerator for an entire year?
I’m glad I finally decided to try 1845.
It may not become my go to steakhouse in DFW, but I’m always happy when a birthday gives me an excuse to try somewhere new.
And that’s really what I enjoy most about celebrating my birthday – good food, a new experience and another year of life to be grateful for.
